The first time Prince and The Revolution ever performed Purple Rain was at First Ave, a venue in Minnesota, for Minnesota Dance Theater benefit. 28 years ago, now (YIKES). There are a couple of notable points to mention about this performance. First, it’s one of the dopest guitar solos in modern memory. Second, there is no cheering, no screams, just an audience of 1983 Minnesotans standing agape as they watch something they could never possibly have imagined unfold in front of them. And finally, they had a van outside the venue which was capturing this performance, which is why it sounds like the version of Purple Rain you’re probably more familiar with. The dude is beyond. Sir Badness himself.
