Visiting a national park in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, award-winning photographer Mr Slater left his camera unattended for a while. It soon attracted the attention of an inquisitive female from a local group of crested black macaque monkeys, known for their intelligence and dexterity. Fascinated by her reflection in the lens, she then somehow managed to start the camera. The upshot: A splendid self-portrait.

Umm, looks like Jorge Louis Borges has been trending on KSR. (And may he forever trend!) 3 days left for Carla Kihlstedt’s Necessary Monsters project, a staged song cycle Kihlstedt wrote with poet Rafael Osés based on Borges’ Book of Imaginary Beings. Along with Kest Schwartzman’s sculptural masks, that makes two Imaginary Beings-inspired projies. We say the more the magic-lier! The piece will premiere July 29th & 30th @ San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Necessary Monsters follows a young writer as she tries in vain to corral the imaginary beings that parade out of her mind in the course of a sleepless night. In this journey, she encounters many beasts – some meddlesome, some winsome, some loathesome – and discovers that she is indeed the sum of their parts.

Carefree White Girl leaves for 4th of July weekend, but not before breaking up with her boyfriend. When he e-mails her 8 hours later he says: “i have a bunch of your shit. I can’t look at it, it hurts too bad.” Before shutting her phone off to go grill brats and dogs and bison and set off fire works in a field she writes back: “Hey Shane, I actually landed in Portland, a bunch of friends are celebrating the 4th on an island off the coast of Washington. Anyway, I’m not sure when I’ll be back, my friend Tom is doing a huge art installation on this island and I’m thinking of sticking around and helping him. So my friend Paul just sent me this link! They store stuff for you when you go through a breakup i guess!? Maybe it’ll be useful?! I don’t really need any of that stuff back right away or anything. yours, xx -carefree white girl”

Nice!! My dear friend Alex just launched this site and it’s already getting picked up. Definitely a novel and smart idea. So awesome.
